Caring for the dental health of the Dartford area and beyond!
  1. TAKE EGGS-TRA SPECIAL CARE OF YOUR TEETH THIS EASTER! - 16th April 2019 by 4drdc-logins

    happy-easter-logo

Not long left now, with Easter only a few days away and shops filling with attractive sugary treats! The Easter Bunny is out whilst adults and children prepare to dig their teeth into their delicious chocolate eggs.

    easter-rabbit

Let’s talk about how Easter celebration can affect our teeth!
Your oral health routine is important to remember over the Easter period and keeping an eye on how much sugar is consumed, especially our children.

Our team at Dartford Road Dental Centre want to ensure that you take the right precautions during this time of year so that your oral health does not suffer and is at its best.

Therefore, we thought we should jump in and offer some Dental tips:

    DRINK PLENTY OF WATER

    1. Water will help to neutralize the acids in your mouth
    2. Encourage your children to drink water by leaving a jug of water on the table during meal times.

    AVOID GRAZING

    1. Limit consumption of sugary foods and beverages to mealtimes only.
    2. Eating between meals increases the time that your teeth are exposed to food. If the foods contain sugar or natural sugars you will be at a greater risk for tooth decay. The longer the sugar is on your teeth the greater the risk for decay.

    AVOID STICKY AND HARD SWEETS

    1. Sticky stubborn sweets tend to get stuck in between teeth!
    2. As the sugars remain in contact with the teeth, the sugars get to work and begin to break down the enamel. Hard boiled sweets can also put your teeth at risk because, in addition to being full of sugar, they can also trigger a dental emergency such as a broken or chipped tooth.

BRUSHING YOUR TEETH – but not straight after your chocolate!

    1. Food and drinks high in sugar soften the enamel (white coating) of the tooth, so it is important that you wait at least 30 minutes before brushing and allowing your saliva to neutralise the harmful acids– as you don’t want to cause enamel erosion!
    2. Don’t forget to brush your teeth! You should aim to brush your teeth for 2 minutes twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. Also remember to include your interdental cleaning aids.

    HEALTHY OPTIONS

    1. Sugar-free eggs and dark chocolate, are now widely available in stores!
    2. Snacks – a few examples, crackers, celery, cheese, milk, water, nuts, fresh vegetables and fruits!

Remember Our teeth and gums play a vital role in our overall health and wellbeing, so it is important to have regular dental check-ups and hygiene appointments.

  2. CPR - 12th April 2019 by 4drdc-logins

    MEDICAL EMERGENCY

    1. CPR
      (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)
    2. TRAINING
    3. AED TRAINING
      (Automated external defibrillator)

Here in Dartford we practice BLS (Basic Life Support) once a year, we feel that it is important and beneficial for everyone to have knowledge of CPR, as you never know when the need may arise. Today we had the opportunity to update and refresh our knowledge with the latest guidelines.

    cpr-2cpr-3

A fast response can mean a better recovery!

    Importance of CPR?

    • Did you know that the brain can only survive approximately five to six minutes without oxygen (after the heart stops)!
    • However, if CPR is performed within the above time the brain may survive the lack of oxygen.

What can I do as a patient to minimise my risk of a medical emergency?

    • Providing your dentist/hygienist with honest information about your current health and health history is vital, as this will help them provide you with the best dental care possible, especially in an emergency.
    • Provide us with current medication on every dental visit.
From over the counter medication to prescribed medication.
    • In the event of an emergency knowing what medications you are currently taking can be vital to your health when we are determining our next course of treatment or prescribing other medications.

We want to ensure you that our dental team, at Dartford Road Dental Centre, are up to date with the latest guidance and training, this means if a medical emergency occurs in the practice our patients will receive quick, effective treatment.

ORAL HEALTH TIPS FOR OUR BUSY MOTHERS!

    1. Keep hydrated – remember to sip on water throughout the day, especially when you’re on the go.
    2. Healthy snacks – Reach for the healthier snacks, cheese and crackers, vegetables and fruit.
    3. High in sugar food and drinks – to be consumed at meals times only. Drinking a sugary drink with a straw will give your teeth less contact to sugar.
    4. Sugar free gum – Try and chew sugar (Xylitol) free gum. The gum will help promote saliva, neutralising the acids in the mouth.
  5. Creation of a practice representative of our vision of dentistry. - 15th March 2018 by 4drdc-logins

“True compassion does not sit on the laps of renovation; it dives with an approach to reconstruction” – I Ayivor

This notion resonated with our vision at Crook Log Dental when considering creating a practice fit for the future. We became co-owners of the practice in 2009 and since then have been making improvements, initially within the surgical rooms and then the decor. We believe the practice in every aspect should represent the ethos of the group clinicians visions, that of provision of excellent dentistry centred around a relaxing patient experience, tailored to the needs and expectations of the clientele we attract.

It quickly became apparent to us that our practice appearance was not really representing the type of dentistry we were doing. In effect, it was giving out mixed messages. On one hand we were aiming to give the ultimate dental experience; on the other hand, the décor and layout were tired and dated. We discussed this with our designers (Paradigm Design Solutions) and they worked with us to put a coherent plan in place that would clearly position the practice and give it a strong‭ ‬ and‭ ‬ memorable brand identity.

The process began with a clear vision, which we communicated to the design team involving a large scale reconstruction. The CGI’s attached show what the initial consultation yielded and then almost a year after the reconstruction of the receptions area photographs show a clear realisation of the original vision. The reconstructive work saw the surgery be finalists in the prestigious Private Dentistry Awards 2017.

For us the two essential aspects leading to a successful transformation were:

    1. A clear vision of our goal when providing dentistry.
    2. Clear communication with a great design team

With these two salient ingredients, the vision became a reality, as can be seen below.

More updates and pictures and posts will be shared on the Instagram and Facebook pages for CrookLog Dental, if you have any comments or feedback feel free to email in/drop a message.

We would like to thank Gavin and the whole Paradigm Designs Solutions team for realising our vision.

Ultimately, we invested in the practice for the benefit of our patients and our team. It is so rewarding to get positive feedback from our regular patients who have witnessed the positive changes over the years. We hope you like it!

  6. National Children’s Dental Health Month - 13th February 2018 by 4drdc-logins

So it’s February, and this month is National Children’s Dental Health Month.

    So what does that mean?

The ADA (American Dental Association) sponsors this event in order to ensure that the right information is given to patients and children to highlight the importance and impact of good oral health.

Here at Crook Log Dental Practice, Bexleyheath we would like to do our bit in giving 5 tips for caring the little ones.

    1) It’s important to brush twice daily for two and a half minutes. To form create a habit, try supervising this at the same times daily until it becomes routine for the child.

    2) Correct brushing technique: Multiple videos can be found on YouTube/websites, just search “Modified Bass Technique.” A soft/medium bristle brush, angled 45 degrees towards the gum, brushing in small circles for 3-5 seconds per tooth surface should provide a good clean

    3) Did you know that the most important active ingredient in toothpaste is the fluoride? Mouthwashes after brushing wash away the toothpaste and reduce its benefits. Refrain your child from rinsing the mouth after brushing and adopt the “spit don’t rinse” habit early on. Mouthwashes can be used between meals!

    4) Unfortunately, fruits & smoothies are full of sugar so it’s best to try to avoid smoothies and just eat the fruit, and when your child eats their fruit it is best served with a main meal. It’s the frequency of sugar consumption that contributes to decay, so this is a good way to reduce that frequency.

    5) Trips and falls. This is a common problem, if the child falls over and a tooth falls out, to give it its best chance of being put back in, hold the tooth from the crown (white part of the tooth) and not the root, then place it in milk and come to the dentist ASAP and call them on the way so they can plan to see the child urgently as time is of the essence, to be exact, the likelihood of success drops considerably after 60 minutes. For more information on this, you can visit the IADT for more in-depth tips (this is a website for dentists but has great tips on how to handle the incident immediately)

  8. Crook Log Dental Practice Q&A’s on Teeth Whitening - 29th January 2016 by 4drdc-logins

    Teeth Whitening

    Questions & Answers

Facts & Statistics from the BBC News September 2015.

As dental professionals we are continuously being asked questions about teeth whitening:

Is it safe? Why can I get it done elsewhere a lot cheaper? Is it legal to get it done by a non dental professional?

The British Dental Association (BDA) says whitening is perfectly safe if, carried out by a registered dental professional. The BDA warns anyone else won’t have the right training or knowledge and could cause permanent damage to your teeth and gums.

Under the Dentists Act 1984, it is illegal for anyone other than dentists or dental health professionals such as hygienists to carry out teeth whitening.

For example, if the mouth-guard containing the bleaching gel does not fit properly some of it may leak and cause painful chemical burns. In extreme cases, people have been sick after swallowing the bleaching product. The BDA says beauticians aren’t properly trained to take a medical history to make sure someone is suitable for teeth whitening.

    Is that actually illegal?

The GDC said: “The Dentists Act makes it illegal for anyone who is not a dentist to give ‘treatment, advice or attendance’ that would usually be given by a dentist. Handing an individual a tooth-whitening tray and advising them on application, amongst other things, could constitute the giving of ‘advice or attendance’ and would be illegal.

So why are home kits allowed? Are they safe?

While only dental professionals can provide a teeth-whitening service, it is perfectly legal for anyone to treat themselves with an over-the-counter kit, provided it contains less than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide. A dentist though can legally use 6% hydrogen peroxide and some home kits do not contain enough whitening product to be effective.

Here at Crook Log we offer 2 types of whitening which are safe for all our patients – In surgery and Home Whitening.

1st step – Have a dental examination with your dentist within the last 6 months to make sure your teeth and gums are fit and healthy.

2nd step – Discuss Whitening with your dentist and decide which whitening procedure suits you best.

3rd step – Complete your whitening treatment.

4th Step – Now you’re ready to show off your pearly whites!

  10. Mouth Cancer… How aware of it are you? - 17th November 2015 by 4drdc-logins

    Mouth Cancer Action Month

    1st November 2015 to 30th November 2015

Did you know that a dentist could save your life in just 2 minutes?

Here at Crook Log Dental Practice in Bexleyheath, all dentists do a complete soft tissue exam and cancer screening at each check up.

Mouth Cancer kills one person every 3 hours in the UK because of late detection.

What are the symptoms of mouth cancer?

    • An ulcer or a white or red patch anywhere in your mouth that does not heal within 3 weeks.
    • A lump or swelling anywhere in the mouth, jaw or neck that persists for more than 3 weeks.
    • Difficulty in swallowing, chewing or moving the jaw or tongue.

There are many other symptoms to look out for, and all can be found on the website below.

    www.mouthcancerfoundation.org

If you suspect anything at all please call us on 0208 303 3838 and ask to see your dentist. Remember examinations are not just to check your teeth, make sure you have regular check ups.
