  4. Keeping Cool In The Heat - 29th July 2019 by 4drdc-logins

In the scorching sun, it’s easy to grab the closest, coldest drink you can find, but do you know how much sugar is in your favourite drink…?

At Dartford Road Dental Centre, our team of Dentists and Hygienists pride themselves on educating the  people of Dartford on how to keep their teeth healthy in between their regular Dental visits at our Dartford based Dental Centre, this means ensuring that they know how to avoid constant sugar attacks on their teeth, by remembering the ‘sugar clock’.

Each time we have something containing sugar, the sugar combines with the plaque bacteria, creating an acid which attacks our teeth for an hour – every time!

So when we are regularly snacking on sugary foods and drinking sugary drinks in between our regular 3 meals a day, our teeth are frequently under attack.

We can limit the amount of acid in our mouths by:

    • Chewing sugar free gum after meals
    • Limiting sugary snacks to meal times only
    • Choosing sugar-free or ‘no added sugar’ snacks/drinks

    Source: NHS

Visit for some great ideas on some alternatives to your go-to sugary snacks/drinks, to help keep your child’s teeth healthy during the summer holidays and beyond!

Our team of Hygienists (Nicola Walker – Link) and (Catherine Edney – Link) will help you to maintain a clean and healthy mouth at home and our resident Oral Health Educator is always on hand to answer any questions you may have regarding keeping your food choices healthy to help prevent tooth decay.

Don’t forget to book yourself and your family in for a check up during the summer holidays, we are fully air conditioned!

  6. HAPPY FATHER’S DAY AND MEN’S HEALTH MONTH! - 12th June 2019 by 4drdc-logins

Father’s Day and Men’s Health Month are both in June this year, where we give extra time to help the Dad we know and love to remember to care for themselves, as much as they care for their loved ones.

    What is Men’s Health Month?

Men’s Health Month, is celebrated across the country to raise awareness about health care for men and focus on encouraging boys, men and their families to practice healthy living decisions, such as exercising and eating healthy.

Our team at Dartford Road Dental Centre, hope to make your search easier this year!

So, the common question…what can I get Dad for Father’s Day?

How about the gift of good health? – By encouraging fathers in your life, to get an annual wellness check-up at their local health centre and regular dental examinations at Dartford Road Dental Centre.

    1. Talk to your dad about his oral health
    2. Schedule a dental check-up together at Dartford – Dad will more likely go, if he has someone to go with!
    3. You want him around for the long haul and good health includes a healthy mouth! So, encourage your dad to take care of himself.
    4. As well as a dental examination, an oral cancer screening is carried out. This will allow any issues to be detected early and addressed before they progress.

Finally, schedule tooth whitening treatment for him at Dartford, in time for Father’s Day!

    Why tooth whitening?

Ageing affects us all differently. One of the ways age can change a person’s appearance is with dull, discoloured teeth. Even if your dad doesn’t smoke, or drink coffee and red wine, his teeth can still give away his age, by how they’ve discoloured slowly over time.

    1. Tooth whitening treatment can make his smile look young and healthy
    2. He’ll look years younger!
    3. He’ll get an oral examination – to ensure his mouth is healthy, before his tooth whitening treatment begins

You will never be able to repay your dad for everything he’s done for you, but you can give him a brighter and healthier looking smile.

Please contact our Dartford Centre, at DA1 on 01322 223927 for more information.

  7. CONGRATULATIONS - 6th June 2019 by 4drdc-logins

Our team at Dartford Road Dental Centre, would like to congratulate our two dentists Dr Claire Culverwell and Dr Naeem Khaleel, on becoming Invisalign providers!

Orthodontics is becoming a more popular choice of treatment for patients, who want to achieve a beautiful straight smile. Metal braces are the traditional way of straightening teeth and is still used today. However, this day in age there are many orthodontic options to select from, which are much more comfortable and discreet.

Invisalign can move your teeth to the desired position and improve your smile’s appearance using, clear, discreet aligners.

    Invisalign – removable appliance

Invisalign works by using a series of clear and comfortable aligners (clear brace) that no one will be able to tell you’re wearing. These aligners are created specifically for your teeth, with each set gradually moving your teeth into the desired position. Invisalign treats nearly all common dental problems, from under and overbites to overcrowded teeth.

Which Orthodontic treatment is best for you?

After an evaluation at Dartford Road Dental Centre, your dentist can determine which orthodontic option is right for you! Visit us at Dartford Road – DA1 today or call Dartford Road Dental Centre on 01322 223927 and move one step closer to your perfect smile!

  8. NATIONAL SMILE MONTH 2019 - 14th May 2019 by 4drdc-logins

    national smile month13th May – 13th June 2019

“A warm smile is the universal language of kindness.” – William Arthur Ward

National Smile Month started back in 1977, aimed to raise awareness of the importance of good Oral Hygiene and how it can improve your overall wellbeing. This event was such a success that it grew over the years to become National Smile Week, and subsequently National Smile Month in 2006!

This year Dartford Road Dental Centre are supporting National Smile Month campaign and want to raise awareness in our local community. Our Oral Health professionals will be visiting year 1 children in a local school to speak about all aspects of their oral health, including discussing sugary snacks Vs healthier alternatives and what to expect when they visit the Dentist.  We hope to motivate adults and children to get brushing and looking after their teeth as an investment in their future. So let’s begin by understanding National Smile Months three central messages.

This year National Smile Month’s key messages remain the same:

    1. Brush your teeth last thing at night and on at least one other occasion with a fluoride toothpaste

Brush for 2 minutes twice a day –  once you have finished brushing your teeth do not rinse your mouth with water, as this washes away all the goodness of fluoride – instead just spit the toothpaste out and let the fluoride in the toothpaste do its magic!

We must also remember the importance of interdental cleaning, such as dental floss. A study found that flossing loosens bacteria and food debris from between the teeth, which allows brushing to be much more effective at removing plaque – A major contributor to the formation of gum disease.

    1. Cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks.

Every time you eat or drink anything sugary, your teeth are under acid attack for up to one hour. This is because the sugar will react with the bacteria in plaque (the sticky coating on your teeth) and produce the harmful acids. So it is important to keep sugary foods and beverages only to mealtimes, this will limit the amount of time your mouth is at risk.

It is advised to consume high in sugar beverages and food in moderation or even better to replace these with healthier alternatives.

    1. Visit your dentist regularly, as often as they recommend.

Visiting your dentist at least every 6 months reduces the chance of developing oral disease. Our dentists and hygienists at Dartford, will be able to recommend and provide you with important advice on brushing your teeth, spot any signs of tooth decay and look for signs of oral cancer.

Here at Dartford, we consider it our mission to help keep your smile looking brilliant!

Great news – We have the following offer available throughout National Smile Month!

  9. Oral Health Talk - 3rd May 2019 by 4drdc-logins

Recently our team member from Crook Log Dental Practice (Dartford Road Dental Centres sister practice) visited a local nursery in Bexleyheath to speak with the nursery and reception children about their dental health. She had a great time talking to children about good tooth brushing techniques using her Mr Smiley tooth model and huge toothbrush, as well as reinforcing healthy eating messages. The children all had a turn each brushing Mr Smileys teeth and enjoyed dressing up as a dentist whilst role playing. Each child received a dental goody bag containing colouring pictures, quizzes, toothbrush and a reward chart to encourage brushing twice a day.

    Q. When should I make my child’s first dental checkup?

First dental checkup should be by child’s first birthday. Childs dentist will schedule additional dental visits accordingly.

    Q. When should I brush and floss my child’s teeth?

Usually between the age of 2 to 4 years, when your child’s teeth are in contact with each other.

    Q. How to care for children’s teeth age 2-4 years?

Children two and older should use fluoridated toothpaste to help prevent decay as their teeth continue to develop. Once children reach two years of age, it is important that children are supervised and encouraged to brush their own teeth. Parents/carers can promote healthy habits by limiting sugary drinks and snacks and offering healthier alternatives.

    Q. Basic rules of Oral Health for everyone?

Brushing, flossing and regular dental check-ups – Brush your teeth for two minutes at least twice a day, once first thing in the morning and before you go to bed.

Replace your toothbrush about every three to four months as dull and frayed bristles will not clean your teeth thoroughly. Brushing alone will not remove the plaque in between your teeth which as a result can harden into calculus therefore, it is important to use interdental cleaning aids such as floss once a day. Regular dental visits are vital to keep your teeth and gums healthy, together with regular hygiene appointments.

Whether your dental check-up is overdue or you haven’t visited Dartford Road Dental Practice before, simply get in touch to find out how we can help you and your family by calling      01322 223927 or book an appointment online.

  10. TAKE EGGS-TRA SPECIAL CARE OF YOUR TEETH THIS EASTER! - 16th April 2019 by 4drdc-logins

Not long left now, with Easter only a few days away and shops filling with attractive sugary treats! The Easter Bunny is out whilst adults and children prepare to dig their teeth into their delicious chocolate eggs.

Let’s talk about how Easter celebration can affect our teeth!
Your oral health routine is important to remember over the Easter period and keeping an eye on how much sugar is consumed, especially our children.

Our team at Dartford Road Dental Centre want to ensure that you take the right precautions during this time of year so that your oral health does not suffer and is at its best.

Therefore, we thought we should jump in and offer some Dental tips:

    1. Water will help to neutralize the acids in your mouth
    2. Encourage your children to drink water by leaving a jug of water on the table during meal times.

    1. Limit consumption of sugary foods and beverages to mealtimes only.
    2. Eating between meals increases the time that your teeth are exposed to food. If the foods contain sugar or natural sugars you will be at a greater risk for tooth decay. The longer the sugar is on your teeth the greater the risk for decay.

    1. Sticky stubborn sweets tend to get stuck in between teeth!
    2. As the sugars remain in contact with the teeth, the sugars get to work and begin to break down the enamel. Hard boiled sweets can also put your teeth at risk because, in addition to being full of sugar, they can also trigger a dental emergency such as a broken or chipped tooth.

BRUSHING YOUR TEETH – but not straight after your chocolate!

    1. Food and drinks high in sugar soften the enamel (white coating) of the tooth, so it is important that you wait at least 30 minutes before brushing and allowing your saliva to neutralise the harmful acids– as you don’t want to cause enamel erosion!
    2. Don’t forget to brush your teeth! You should aim to brush your teeth for 2 minutes twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. Also remember to include your interdental cleaning aids.

    1. Sugar-free eggs and dark chocolate, are now widely available in stores!
    2. Snacks – a few examples, crackers, celery, cheese, milk, water, nuts, fresh vegetables and fruits!

Remember Our teeth and gums play a vital role in our overall health and wellbeing, so it is important to have regular dental check-ups and hygiene appointments.
