Oral Health Talk

3rd May 2019

Recently our team member from Crook Log Dental Practice (Dartford Road Dental Centres sister practice) visited a local nursery in Bexleyheath to speak with the nursery and reception children about their dental health. She had a great time talking to children about good tooth brushing techniques using her Mr Smiley tooth model and huge toothbrush, as well as reinforcing healthy eating messages. The children all had a turn each brushing Mr Smileys teeth and enjoyed dressing up as a dentist whilst role playing. Each child received a dental goody bag containing colouring pictures, quizzes, toothbrush and a reward chart to encourage brushing twice a day.

Q. When should I make my child’s first dental checkup?

First dental checkup should be by child’s first birthday. Childs dentist will schedule additional dental visits accordingly.

Q. When should I brush and floss my child’s teeth?

Usually between the age of 2 to 4 years, when your child’s teeth are in contact with each other.

Q. How to care for children’s teeth age 2-4 years?

Children two and older should use fluoridated toothpaste to help prevent decay as their teeth continue to develop. Once children reach two years of age, it is important that children are supervised and encouraged to brush their own teeth. Parents/carers can promote healthy habits by limiting sugary drinks and snacks and offering healthier alternatives.

Q. Basic rules of Oral Health for everyone?

Brushing, flossing and regular dental check-ups – Brush your teeth for two minutes at least twice a day, once first thing in the morning and before you go to bed.

2 MINUTES 2 TIMES A DAY

Replace your toothbrush about every three to four months as dull and frayed bristles will not clean your teeth thoroughly. Brushing alone will not remove the plaque in between your teeth which as a result can harden into calculus therefore, it is important to use interdental cleaning aids such as floss once a day. Regular dental visits are vital to keep your teeth and gums healthy, together with regular hygiene appointments.
