“A warm smile is the universal language of kindness.” – William Arthur Ward

National Smile Month started back in 1977, aimed to raise awareness of the importance of good Oral Hygiene and how it can improve your overall wellbeing. This event was such a success that it grew over the years to become National Smile Week, and subsequently National Smile Month in 2006!

This year Dartford Road Dental Centre are supporting National Smile Month campaign and want to raise awareness in our local community. Our Oral Health professionals will be visiting year 1 children in a local school to speak about all aspects of their oral health, including discussing sugary snacks Vs healthier alternatives and what to expect when they visit the Dentist.  We hope to motivate adults and children to get brushing and looking after their teeth as an investment in their future. So let’s begin by understanding National Smile Months three central messages.

This year National Smile Month’s key messages remain the same:

  1. Brush your teeth last thing at night and on at least one other occasion with a fluoride toothpaste

Brush for 2 minutes twice a day –  once you have finished brushing your teeth do not rinse your mouth with water, as this washes away all the goodness of fluoride – instead just spit the toothpaste out and let the fluoride in the toothpaste do its magic!

We must also remember the importance of interdental cleaning, such as dental floss. A study found that flossing loosens bacteria and food debris from between the teeth, which allows brushing to be much more effective at removing plaque – A major contributor to the formation of gum disease.

  1. Cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks.

Every time you eat or drink anything sugary, your teeth are under acid attack for up to one hour. This is because the sugar will react with the bacteria in plaque (the sticky coating on your teeth) and produce the harmful acids. So it is important to keep sugary foods and beverages only to mealtimes, this will limit the amount of time your mouth is at risk.

It is advised to consume high in sugar beverages and food in moderation or even better to replace these with healthier alternatives.

  1. Visit your dentist regularly, as often as they recommend.

Visiting your dentist at least every 6 months reduces the chance of developing oral disease. Our dentists and hygienists at Dartford, will be able to recommend and provide you with important advice on brushing your teeth, spot any signs of tooth decay and look for signs of oral cancer.

Here at Dartford, we consider it our mission to help keep your smile looking brilliant!
